Suppression

Its one thing to talk back and one thing to just try and get your point across.

In my family, at least, whenever i try to explain what i’m trying to say or when i’m trying to express my opinion, i get shut down because “i was being very disrespectful and not listening to the parents. I was talking back”. I feel that the reason parents say that phrase is because they don’t want to be wrong and they don’t want someone else to oppose them with a different opinion, especially one of their children. They say “it’s just a phase” and then continue to compare the child to other “respectful” or rather quiet/”behaved” children.

From my point of view, it actually just builds up this little rage in a child because he or she wants to be able to get across what they want to say. I, being the liberal rebel and everything, just start arguing with my parents in order to just make them understand my views. But of course, i’m still a little kid and i haven’t matured yet. It’s not wrong to say that i don’t know everything yet, but i am educated and i am growing in a different environment and community in comparison to  my parents. This way of just shutting the child and making them listen to the parent’s opinion suppresses the child’s need to contribute to the world by providing their voice in several issues.

I’m forced to do many things because my dad does things like that. This has caused me to not want to turn on the radio in my dad’s car, lose interest in conversation with him, and not even want to speak out about what i want to say because every time i do, i get punished and he pulls out a chappal (slipper/shoe) to scold me.

Talking back, in my opinion, is being extremely rude and saying vulgar things to your parents when not even necessary. Shouting when not necessary. I do shout sometimes and i agree but talking back is not something i often do.

Notice i’ve tried to illustrate that its my opinion or my point or my view in this rant. I dont mean to offend anyone. My blog is one of the only places i can express my views so here it is.

My argument might be farfetched or just plain wrong but hey, thats why this is a blog.
